Pioneers fall twice to finish own tournament; Wilke and Fujimoto earn spots on all-tourney team

GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College softball team wrapped up its own Pioneer Invitational Sunday with a pair of setbacks.

The Pioneers lost an 11-0 decision to Westminster College and then fell 9-1 to Iowa Wesleyan College in the consolation game. In the title contest, the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh prevailed over Westminster 7-2.

Grinnell had a pair of players make the all-tournament team, Summer Wilke '15 and Lindsay Fujimoto '15.

In the Westminster game, the visitors led 3-0 through two innings before back-to-back home runs sparked a six-run burst in the third. The Blue Jays added solo runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

Grinnell managed three hits, a single to center by Alyssa Bean '16 in the second inning and infield singles by Grace Ryan '14 and Wilke in the fourth.

Jennifer Fulton pitched the whole game for Grinnell and struck out three.

Fujimoto had a pair of hits, including a triple to right-center in the fifth inning, to spark the Pioneers' five-hit attack against Iowa Wesleyan.

The Tigers tallied four runs in the first inning before the Pioneers scratched out a run in the third as Fujimoto hit an infield single and was plated by Wilke's triple to right field. Iowa Wesleyan answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning and added another in the fifth.

Grinnell's other hits were a single to left by Aniela Wendt '15 in the first inning and a single through the right side by Jeanette Au '16 in the fourth.

Wilke was the pitcher of record for Grinnell and struck out one batter.

Grinnell, 0-14 on the season, travels to East Peoria, Ill., this coming weekend for the Midwest Conference Crossover event.
