Grinnell women's tennis team loses to Carleton in NCAA Regional Championships

Box Score

CHICAGO, Ill. – The Grinnell College women's tennis team lost a 5-1 decision to regionally-ranked Carleton College in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Regional Championships Friday.

Grinnell got its victory at No. 2 doubles from the team of Laura Krull '13 and Emma Macdonald '14. They worked their way to a 9-8 (7-2) win.

Carleton, ranked seventh in the region, added three more wins in singles to secure the victory though Krull led her match at No. 1 singles when action was halted.

Carleton, 16-7 and ranked seventh in the region, moves into Saturday's semifinal round against the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

“It was a full team effort and a good battle by our team against a really good Carleton squad,” said Grinnell assistant coach Rick Mitchell. “From top to bottom, we showed very good performance. We had to battle through injury today, and everybody had to move up. Laura had to play with a different doubles partner and they got the win, so that's great to see on their part.”

Grinnell finishes its campaign with a 14-9 mark, though Krull's season continues as she'll compete in the NCAA D-III National Singles Championships from May 23-25 in Kalamazoo, Mich.
