Pioneer women's soccer team earns another overtime victory

Box Score MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – Overtime has proved to be a good time for the Grinnell College women's soccer team.

Pauline Zheng '14 scored in the ninth minute of Tuesday's extra period against Cornell College to give the Pioneers a 2-1 victory in the Midwest Conference opener for both teams. It was the second overtime win in as many tries for Grinnell this season.

Zheng's goal, her first of the season, came just 32 seconds before the end of overtime to send Grinnell to 4-2 on the season as Cornell fell to 3-2. Abby Jaeger '14 had the assist on the goal, her second of the game to give her a team-high four on the season.

Grinnell opened the scoring in the 11th minute when Carolyn Silverman '17 found the back of the net for her second score of the season. Cornell came back just four minutes later as Bethany Stivers scored to tie the game.

The score remained 1-all through halftime and the end of regulation.

Jordan Young '14 played keeper for Grinnell the first half and had one save, while Katy Oldach '16 worked the second half and overtime while garnering two saves.

Both teams had seven shots, with Carolyn Silverman and Elle Silverman '15 taking two apiece for Grinnell and Jaeger, Eva Smith '16 and Zheng getting one each.

The Pioneers host a pair of contests this coming weekend, entertaining preseason MWC favorite Lake Forest College on Saturday and Carroll University Sunday.
