Grinnell gets first set win, but falls in 4 to UW-Platteville

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The Grinnell College volleyball team collected its first set victory of the season, but in the end still dropped a 3-1 decision to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Saturday morning at the latter's tournament.

Game scores, in favor of the hosts, were 25-14, 25-13, 22-25 and 25-16.

Grinnell never led in the first set, but shot out to a 5-3 lead in the second on Jeanette Au's '16 ace serve. The Pioneers continued to hold command and were up 11-9 before the hosts went on an 8-0 run to pull away.

The third set was tied multiple times, including at 19-all, when Grinnell scored three unanswered points on a UW-Platteville attack error, kill by Natalie Duncombe '15 and ace serve by Monica Knaack '17.

The hosts came back to tie things at 22-all before Claire Weidman '15 delivered a kill and the UW-Platteville had consecutive attack errors, giving Grinnell the win.

Grinnell got out to a 3-1 lead in the next set with the aid of Olivia Fromm's '17 kill, but the hosts scored eight of the next nine points and never looked back.

Claire Weidman and Evelyn Weidman '17 both had six kills in the match, while Lindsay Fujimoto '15 and Au had 10 and eight assists, respectively. Au also had two ace serves and Sydney McClendon '16 came up with 18 digs.

Liz Nelson '17 and Ariel Lepito '17 had five and four blocks, respectively.

Carroll University then defeated Grinnell 25-15, 25-20 and 25-16. Claire Weidman had eight kills and Fromm seven. Fujimoto and Au had 13 and 10 assists, respectively.

Fujimoto also served four aces, while McClendon had 12 digs. Nelson added three blocks.

Grinnell, 0-10, plays at the ACM Tournament in Decorah next weekend.
