Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College women's soccer team posted its second shutout in its last three outings with a 6-0 blanking of Buena Vista University Sunday at Springer Field.
Patty Murphy-Geiss '14 had her second two-goal match in a row, while
Kristen Stacey '16 also had two goals. Murphy-Geiss now has a team-high four goals on the season.
Also getting into the scoring act were
Eva Smith '16 and
Hannah Safter '14.
Dabney Hofammann '15 had two assists.
Jordan Young '14 and
Katy Oldach '16 combined on the shutout at keeper, with Young recording one save. They were aided by a tenacious effort by the team's defense including the likes of
Claire Ruegg '16,
Elle Silverman '15, Nora Bresette-Buccino '16 and
Eden Marek '15.
Grinnell jumped out to a 5-0 halftime lead, with Murphy-Geiss scoring in the 13th and 18th minutes. In the 13th minute,
Sarah Jensen '15 took a shot from the far side of the box, and Murphy-Geiss got the rebound on the far side and angled a shot on the ground into the near corner of the net.
On Murphy-Geiss' next goal, she led
Carolyn Silverman '17 with a pass from the middle. Silverman beat her defender with a few dribbles and then worked the ball to Murphy-Geiss, who drilled it into the net.
In the 21st minute,
Abby Jaeger '14 took a corner cook from the near side. Smith streaked into the middle of the box and headed it in for her second goal of the year.
Stacey scored goals in the 32nd and 35th minutes. On her first goal, Hofammann made a run on the far side and beat her defender. She centered the ball to Stacey, who fired it in from just outside the goal.
Hofammann assisted Stacey's next goal, as well, as she made a pass from the far corner of the box to the near corner. Stacey received it and fired a shot on the ground into the goal.
Safter finished off the scoring in the 60th minute. On the play, she ran down the near side and received the ball from Murphy-Geiss. Safter ended up one-on-one with the keeper in the box and put a shot into the near side corner of the goal.
Grinnell is now 3-1, while Buena Vista fell to 1-3. The Pioneers are at home again Wednesday when Central College visits Springer Field. The contest begins at 5 p.m.
