Pioneer women's tennis team opens MWC South play with two shutouts

MONMOUTH, Ill. – The Grinnell College women's tennis team opened Midwest Conference South Division play Sunday with a pair of shutout victories.

The Pioneers defeated both Illinois College and Monmouth College by 9-0 scores to improve to 2-0 in the division and 3-1 in all matches.

In the Illinois College match, Julia Rumley '16 blanked her opponent 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles while Minna Montgomery '16 gave up just one game while cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5.

Grinnell's other winners were all in straight sets with victories by Shirlene Luk '15 at No. 1 (6-2, 6-3), Virginia Purcell '17 at No. 2 (6-1, 6-2), Briannah Wilson '17 at No. 4 (6-2, 6-2) and Rebecca Richman '15 at No. 6 (6-1, 6-2).

All three Pioneer doubles teams won 8-0 – Emma Macdonald '14 and Shanaz Daneshdoost '17 at No. 1, Montgomery and Rumley at No. 2 and Richman and Emily Groth '14 at No. 3.

The Pioneers had three players post 6-0, 6-0 shutouts in singles play against Monmouth – Macdonald at No. 3, Rumley at No. 4 and Groth at No. 6.

Sadhana Athreya '14 won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1, Daneshdoost was victorious 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 and Wilson posted a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 5.

The No. 2 doubles team of Montgomery and Rumley and No. 3 unit of Groth and Richman each won 8-0. Feldman and Purcell posted an 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles.

Grinnell travels to Decorah Tuesday to face non-conference foe Luther College.
