Big 2nd half run sends Grinnell men's basketball team past Carroll

Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College's men's basketball team used a big second half run to derail Carroll University 105-95 Saturday afternoon at Darby Gymnasium.

The Pioneers, who moved to 10-2 overall and 5-2 in the Midwest Conference, trailed by 10 points with 15 minutes to go before rallying with a 13-point run later in the half to secure the victory.

Julian Marx '17 had 24 points to lead the Pioneers, hitting 8-of-13 shots from 3-point land. Patrick Maher '14 added 17 points and three steals, Luke Yeager '15 tallied 15 points and Tague Zachary '15 had a big effort with 14 points, six rebounds and two blocked shots.

Aaron Levin '14 also had 14 points and Jack Taylor '15 scored 13 to go along with three steals. Cody Olson '14 led the team in assists with eight.

Andrew Nottling scored 25 points to lead the visitors, who are 7-6 overall and 4-4 in the league.

After giving up the first basket, Grinnell responded with an 18-4 run with all the points coming on 3-pointers. Marx and Taylor had two treys each, while Yeager and Zachary added one apiece for an 18-6 Pioneer lead.

However, Carroll gradually came back and went ahead 54-53 late in the half before Marx drained a 3-pointer to put Grinnell ahead by two heading into the locker room.

The visitors started hot in the second half, building a 68-58 lead with 15:09 to go. Carroll was still ahead 72-64 a minute later when Grinnell went on an 11-3 run to tie the game. Zachary made a 3-pointer and Maher sank a layup and two treys to tie the game at 75-all with 11:02 left.

Carroll still led by a point with 9:01 to go and Grinnell held a slim 89-86 lead at the 7:31 mark before going on a 13-point run to essentially put away the game.

Marx began things with a 3-pointer, Yeager hit two free throws and Zachary a trey to make it 97-86. Levin added a layup and Kyle Parker '17 a 3-pointer to push Grinnell ahead 102-86 with 4:48 to go. Carroll never got closer than 10 the rest of the way.

Grinnell takes to the road Tuesday, playing Cornell College in Mount Vernon. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
