Grinnell women's basketball team sets free throw record in narrow loss to Carroll

Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – Three days after setting a new school record for points in a game, the Grinnell College women's basketball team shattered another mark.

The Pioneers broke the school record for free throw percentage in a game as they hit 95 percent of their attempts from the charity stripe in a 73-72 setback to Carroll University Saturday afternoon at Darby Gymnasium.

Grinnell drained 19-of-20 shots from the free throw line, eclipsing the previous best of 93.3 percent against Ripon College in 2007.

Grinnell led by six points with 1:43 left, but the visitors closed out with a seven-point run capped by a layup from Malory Christensen with 4 seconds left to seal the win.

Alissa Hirsh '16 scored a career-high 32 points to lead the Pioneers, who are 0-7 in Midwest Conference play and 1-11 in all games. Anne Boldt '16 added 10 points, three assists and three blocked shots. Alex Neckopulos '17 and Lydia Stariha '17 had five rebounds each.

Breann Maryanski scored 19 points to lead the visitors, who moved to 5-3 in the MWC and 8-5 in all games.

After falling behind by seven early, Grinnell roared back. After tying things at 23-all, Grinnell finished off the first half with a 14-2 run. Leah Greenberg '17 drained a 3-pointer and Boldt two free throws to put the Pioneers ahead by five.

After Carroll scored, Hirsh made two free throws and a layup to push the Pioneers ahead 32-25. Hirsh followed with a basket and Boldt a bucket and free throw to make it a 37-25 Grinnell lead at intermission.

The visitors crept back and tied the game at 48-all with 11:53 to go in the game. However, Grinnell answered with a nine-point run as Haley Lopez '17 drained a 3-pointer, Hirsh made two baskets and Alex Plemmons '15 sank two free throws for a 57-48 lead with 8:01 remaining.

Again, Carroll rallied and went on to win the contest.

Grinnell takes to the road Tuesday, playing Cornell College in Mount Vernon. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
