Pioneer women's basketball team gets first MWC victory

Box Score APPLETON, Wis. – The Grinnell College women's basketball team collected its first Midwest Conference win of the season Saturday afternoon, rolling past Lawrence University 62-48.

Alissa Hirsh '16 had a game-high 20 points for the Pioneers, who improved to 1-8 in the league and 2-12 in all games. She also had two assists and two steals.

Abby Jaeger '14 chipped in with 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while Anne Boldt '16 had 11 points and nine boards. Sophia Gatton '17 and Lydia Stariha '17 each had two assists.

Alex Deshler had 14 points and 14 rebounds for the Vikings, who fell to 1-7 in the MWC and 3-10 in all games.

Lawrence led by five points twice during the first half and was still up by four with 7:24 left when Grinnell went on a key seven-point run. Plemmons hit a jumper, Boldt a 3-pointer and Jaeger a layup to make it a 24-21 Grinnell lead with 5:21 remaining.

After Lawrence cut the gap to one, Jordan Matosky '16 made a basket and Jaeger two free throws with a second to go to put Grinnell up 28-23 at the break.

Grinnell led by three early in the second half before erupting for eight consecutive points to open up the game. Cristal Coleman '15 made a basket, Boldt and Jaeger two free throws each and Gatton a jumper to put Grinnell up 36-25 with 13:15 to go.

Lawrence got as close as five in the closing minutes but Grinnell held on for the win.

The Pioneers return to Darby Gymnasium Wednesday night to host Illinois College. Game time is 7 p.m.
