Grinnell rallies, but can't overcome Lady Blues

Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College women's basketball team saw a second-half rally fall short as Illinois College held on for a 61-52 victory Wednesday night at Darby Gymnasium.

The Pioneers fell behind by as many as 11 early in the second half before coming back to make it a two-point game. However, the visitors responded with a 9-0 run and were never challenged after that.

Anne Boldt '16 scored a team-high 15 points for the Pioneers, who are 1-9 in the Midwest Conference and 2-13 overall. Alissa Hirsh '16 and Abby Jaeger '14 had seven and six rebounds, respectively, while Hirsh also dished out three assists.

Hannah McGinnis led the Lady Blues, who are 8-2 in the MWC and 10-5 overall, with a double-double of 23 points and 18 rebounds.

Grinnell had a few leads early in the first half before Illinois College responded for a 34-25 halftime lead. The visitors increased that margin to 11 points at the 17:34 mark of the second half before the Pioneers soared back.

Coleman drained a 3-pointer, Jaeger sank two free throws, Coleman added a layup and Jaeger hit a jumper to make it 38-36 at the 13:23 mark.

But that's when Illinois College caught fire, using a run to go ahead 47-36. The Lady Blues' lead was never less than seven points the rest of the way.
