Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College football team put up a great battle Saturday against Cornell College, but in the end the Rams pulled away for a 35-17 Midwest Conference South Division win at Rosenbloom Field.
Grinnell was within 14-10 after three quarters before the Rams tallied 21 points in the fourth period to improve to 1-0 in the division and 3-1 overall. Grinnell fell to 0-1 in the division and 1-4 in all games.
Sam Poulos '16 completed 17-of 25 passes for Grinnell for 153 yards. Top receivers were
Zach McGriff '18, who had five catches for 28 yards, and
Jacob Bernholtz '17, who each had four catches for 53 yards.
Bernholtz also rushed for 82 yards and a score.
Defensively,
David Ternes '15 tallied 12 tackles,
Daniel Munger '15 added 11 and
Barrett Morrissette seven.
Cornell shot out to a 14-0 first-period lead. In the second quarter, Grinnell drove all the way to Cornell's 2-yard line but couldn't punch it in.
Graham Fisher '16 booted a 24-yard field goal with 1 tick left on the clock, making it a 14-3 contest at intermission.
The Pioneers got the ball to start the second half and promptly put together a 14-play, 85-yard scoring drive. Poulos had two 10-yard completions to McGriff during the series and also rushed 10 yards before Bernholtz punched it into the end zone with 8:14 left. Fisher's extra point made it 14-10.
Cornell got a touchdown early in the fourth period before Grinnell countered with a score on a 12-play, 75-yard drive. Poulos completed a 17-yard pass to
Jacob Meixler '15 and ran for a 14-yard gain before finishing off the series with a 2-yard TD run. Fisher's extra point made it 21-17 with 9:49 left in the game.
However, Cornell scored on its next two series to cap the win.
The Pioneers are home again next Saturday when Illinois College visits Rosenbloom Field. Game time is 1 p.m.
