Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College women's basketball capped a wild comeback in thrilling fashion Saturday afternoon to knock off Lake Forest College 64-62 at Darby Gymnasium.
Alissa Hirsh's '16 18-foot jumper from the right wing with :04 left finished off a comeback that saw the Pioneers bounce back from a 14-point second-half deficit.
With the win, Grinnell improved to 2-1 in the Midwest Conference and 2-3 overall, while Lake Forest dipped to 1-2 in the league and 1-4 in all games.
Hirsh scored a game-high 24 points for Grinnell and also had five assists and two steals.
Alex Neckopulos '17 added a double-double for Grinnell with 11 points and a game-high 16 boards.
Sophia Gatton '17 also had 11 points and
Kayla Morrissey '18 a pair of steals.
The Pioneers fell behind by seven in the first half and trailed 31-25 at intermission.
In the second half, the Foresters grabbed a 14-point edge at 41-27 with 15:46 remaining.
It was still an 11-point game at the 13:31 mark before the Pioneers went on a 15-6 run to get back into contention. Hirsh began things when she hit a free throw and
Lydia Stariha '17 drained a 3-pointer to make it 45-37.
After Lake Forest scored,
Leah Greenberg '17 hit a trey and Neckopulus sank a free throw to make it 47-41.
Lake Forest scored again before Hirsh made a layup and free throw and Neckopulos two charity tosses. After a Forester score, Gatton made a 3-pointer at the 7:44 mark to bring the Pioneers within 51-49.
Grinnell hung tight and eventually took the lead at 56-55 on a pair of Hirsh free throws with 5:35 remaining.
Grinnell never trailed again, though Lake Forest forced two ties including 62-all with a free throw at the :23 mark. The Pioneers then worked the ball around before Hirsh delivered her game-winning shot.
The Pioneers step out of league play Sunday when Presentation College visits Darby Gymnasium. Game time is 1 p.m.
