Pioneer men's basketball team falls to 6th-ranked St. Norbert

Box Score DE PERE, Wis. – Nationally-ranked St. Norbert College used a big run in late in the first half to build a 21-point lead at intermission on its way to a 113-88 men's basketball victory over Grinnell College Saturday afternoon.

The Green Knights, who are ranked sixth by D3hoops.com and riding an 18-game winning  streak, led just 45-38 before closing out the first half with an 18-4 run to take a 63-42 lead into the locker room.

Playing before a Schuldes Center record attendance crowd of 2,204, St. Norbert moved to 20-1 overall and 16-1 in the Midwest Conference while Grinnell fell to 16-5 in all games and 11-5 in the league.

Patrick Maher '14 poured in 24 points and grabbed six rebounds for Grinnell, while Jack Taylor '15 had 19 points and Mike Porter '17 and Luke Yeager '15 10 apiece.

Yeager also had four steals, while Taylor and Julian Marx '17 dished out three assists each.

Grinnell got out to an early 3-0 lead with Porter's trey and twice led by five, the first time at 8-3 on Yeager's jumper and again at 10-5 on a jumper by Kyle Parker '17.

St. Norbert rallied, though, and took the lead for good on Andrew Schwerer's basket with 10:50 to go in the half. The Green Knights stretched their lead to 12 before Grinnell made a run, as Maher sank two free throws and Cody Olson '14 drained a 3-pointer to make it 45-38 with 4:20 left in the half.

That's when the Green Knights responded with a run of their own to take a 21-point halftime lead. St. Norbert scored the first nine points of the second half and never looked back.

Grinnell finishes the regular season with two home games, the first a Wednesday meeting with Cornell College. Game time at Darby Gymnasium is 5:30 p.m.
