Pioneer men's basketball team punches ticket to MWC Tourney with win over Cornell

Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College men's basketball team qualified for the Midwest Conference Tournament for the fourth year in a row with a 107-93 victory over Cornell College Wednesday at Darby Gymnasium.

Luke Yeager '15 led a balanced Grinnell scoring attack with 21 points as the Pioneers improved to 12-5 in the league and 17-5 overall. Julian Marx '17 added 19 points, Patrick Maher '14 scored 16, Jack Taylor '15 poured in 15 and Kyle Parker '17 had 11.

Nick Curta '17 grabbed nine rebounds, Maher dished out seven assists and Yeager had four of the team's 13 steals.

Nick Bobb scored 24 points for the Rams, who are 6-14 overall and 5-12 in the MWC.

Grinnell raced out to a fast start, breaking out to a 14-4 lead. Taylor had two 3-pointers and a pair of free throws to spark the run, Parker added a 3-pointer, Mike Porter '17 a layup and Maher a free throw.

Cornell rallied and came within two before Grinnell took off again to lead 56-47 at halftime.

The Rams got as close as five points in the second half and still trailed by six with 4:01 left when Marx hit a 3-pointer and Yeager a layup to give the Pioneers some breathing room with a 102-91 lead at the 2:39 mark.

After Cornell sank two free throws, Yeager finished the scoring with a layup and 3-pointer.

Grinnell finishes the regular season Saturday at Darby Gymnasium against Lawrence University. The Senior Day game is slated for 1 p.m.

The Midwest Conference Tournament will be the following Friday and Saturday in De Pere, Wis.
