Pioneer women's basketball team closes season on solid note

Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College women's basketball team saved its best for last, winning its season finale 66-50 against Lawrence University Saturday afternoon at Darby Gymnasium.

The win snapped an eight-game losing streak for Grinnell.

Anne Boldt '16 and Cristal Coleman '15 both nearly had double-doubles for the Pioneers. Boldt tallied a game-high 21 points and nine rebounds, while Coleman had 11 points and nine boards to go along with two steals.

Abby Jaeger '14 celebrated Senior Day with 11 points and three assists. Boldt and Sophia Gatton '17 each had three assists, as well, while Alex Plemmons '15 blocked two shots.

Grinnell finishes up at 2-16 in the Midwest Conference and 3-20 overall. Lawrence, which got 14 points from Alex Deshler, wound up 1-17 in the league and 3-20 in all games.

It was a tight game most of the first half before the Pioneers went on a 12-3 run that finished off the half and extended into the next.

Leading 26-22, Haley Lopez '17 drained a 3-pointer. After a Lawrence free throw, Coleman drained two charity shots to send Grinnell into the locker room with a 31-23 lead.

Boldt made two free throws to start the second half. After a basket by the Vikings, Gatton hit a jumper and Plemmons two free throws to push the Pioneers ahead 38-25.

The visitors did climb back within six, but Grinnell answered with an eight-point run that proved to be the back-breaker for Lawrence. Boldt began things with a layup and 3-pointer, Jaeger sank two free throws and Plemmons another to make it a 47-33 game with 7:45 left.

Lawrence never got closer than 12 the rest of the way.
