Box Score DE PERE, Wis. – The Grinnell College men's basketball team gave its all in an effort to win its first Midwest Conference Tournament title since 2001, but nationally-ranked St. Norbert College used a 13-0 run down the stretch for a 99-86 win in the league title game Saturday.
By winning the crown, the fifth-ranked Green Knights secured the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament while improving to 24-1 and extending their winning streak to 22 games.
The Pioneers, who on Friday tied the school record for wins in a season, fell to 19-6.
Grinnell's balanced scoring attack was sparked by
Luke Yeager '15, who had 13 points as well as six rebounds.
Patrick Maher '14 added 12 points and five assists, while
Julian Marx '17 also had 12 points.
Mike Porter '17 and
Jack Taylor '15 scored 11 points apiece. Taylor also dished out five assists.
St. Norbert built an 11-point lead in the first half before Grinnell responded with a 14-2 run to go up by one. Yeager began the run with a layup and Marx drained a 3-pointer.
After St. Norbert got a basket, Marx hit a 3-pointer and
Tague Zachary '15 added two more shots from beyond the arc to put Grinnell ahead 51-50 with 1:01 left.
St. Norbert closed out the half with four straight points to take a 54-51 lead into the locker room.
The Green Knights got their lead up to six points midway through the second half, but again Grinnell rallied and tied the contest at 86-all on Yeager's 3-pointer with 3:38 left.
However, St. Norbert tallied the next 13 points, 10 on free throws, to earn the victory.
