Pioneer baseball team sweeps St. Olaf

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Grinnell College baseball team swept St. Olaf College in a twin bill Saturday.

Grinnell won the opener 5-3. Niko Takayesu '17 and Anthony Mack '16 both went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Pioneers. Mack had a homer among his totals and Takayesu a double.

Andrew Kelley '14 scattered eight hits and fanned six batters over eight innings in earning the win. Eli Freese '15 tossed a hitless ninth inning and struck out two to earn the save.

Grinnell broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the fifth inning. Mack had a two-run homer to spark the big frame, while Matt Schaeffer '14 had an RBI single.

Grinnell got one more run in the sixth on Takayesu's RBI double.

Takayesu and Steven Petritis '15 both had two hits in a 7-1 victory over St. Olaf. Mack had another homer, while Takayesu, Matt Godinsky '16 and Ryan Penaflor '16 had doubles.

Graham Fisher '16 pitched a five-hitter and struck out three to get the win.

Grinnell scored twice in the first inning on RBI doubles by Godinsky and Penaflor, and added four runs in the second as Mack belted a three-run homer and Matt Hammond '17 had a sacrifice fly.

The Pioneers' other run came in the sixth inning on Petritis' RBI single.

Grinnell, 6-5, was slated to play St. Thomas on Sunday.
