Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS – The Grinnell College baseball team split a pair of contests Saturday, beating Washington University 10-8 in 11 innings and falling 15-11 to St. Norbert College.
Anthony Mack '16, the national hitter of the week, went 4-for-5 against Wash U. including a double.
Kainoa Inafuku '14 had three hits and
Walker Bell '15 a pair.
Andrew Kelley '14 pitched the final six innings, giving up no runs and striking out five to earn the win.
Grinnell scored seven runs in the first inning, which was highlighted by two-run hits by Inafuku and
Niko Takayesu '17.
The hosts scored three runs in the bottom of the inning and five more in the second for an 8-7 advantage. Grinnell tied it in the fifth and the contest went to extra innings.
In the 11th, Inafuku had an RBI single and an error allowed the other run to score.
In the game with St. Norbert, Takayesu, Inafuku and
Teague Towner '17 each had two hits.
Yuki Kawahara '15 had a triple and
Eli Freese '15 a double.
Ryan Penaflor '16 had an RBI in the first inning and
Matt Schaeffer '14 an RBI single in the second. Grinnell got a run in the sixth on Kawahara's RBI single, and added three runs in the seventh on Towner's two-run single and a run-scoring double by Freese.
The Pioneers made things interesting in the ninth with five runs, three coming from Kawahara's three-run triple to left. Towner and Takayesu also had RBIs.
Grinnell, 7-7, meets both teams again Sunday.
