Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS – The Grinnell College baseball team dropped a pair of games Sunday, falling 6-1 to St. Norbert College and 4-1 to Washington University.
In the St. Norbert game, the Green Knights belted a grand slam homer in the eighth inning to extend a tight 2-1 lead.
Grinnell managed just three hits, including a double by
Anthony Mack '16. St. Norbert scratched out solo runs in the fourth and seventh innings before Grinnell sliced the lead in half with a run in the top of the eighth.
Kainoa Inafuku '14 led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Teague Towner '17, took third on
Yuki Kawahara's '15 single and scored when
Niko Takayesu '17 reached on a fielder's choice.
Graham Fisher '16, Grinnell's starter, was the hard-luck loser. He gave up just three hits and no earned runs while fanning seven batters in five innings of work.
Grinnell could manage just a single run against Washington despite rapping out nine hits, including three by
Walker Bell '15 and two from Mack.
The Pioneers opened the scoring in the third inning. With one out, Takayesu walked, moved to third on a single by Mack and scored when
Matt Godinsky '16 singled.
The hosts tied the game in the bottom of the third, scored two more in the sixth and another in the seventh.
John Essig '16 went the distance on the mound for Grinnell, giving up 11 hits and striking out one.
Grinnell, 7-9, is slated to host Simpson College Wednesday at Pioneer Park. Game time is 3 p.m.
