Box Score 2 GRINNELL, Iowa – A pair of come-from-behind thrilling wins sent Grinnell College to a 3-1 record in the Midwest Conference South Division standings Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Park.
The Pioneers erased 7-1 deficit in the opener against Monmouth College to post an 8-7 win, and then rallied from 3-0 down to win 8-4 in the second game.
Ryan Penaflor '16 had three hits in the first game, including the game-winner, while
Niko Takayesu '17 and
Anthony Mack '16 added two apiece. Mack had a homer among his totals, while Takayesu,
Matt Hammond '17 and
Teague Towner '17 added doubles.
Andrew Kelley '14, the last of five Grinnell pitchers, earned the win.
Monmouth shot out to a 5-0 lead with solo runs in the first and third innings and three more in the fourth. Grinnell got a run in the bottom of the fourth on Mack's solo homer to left.
Monmouth made it 7-1 with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings. But that's when the Pioneers exploded, scoring six runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Takayesu doubled to left and scored when Hammond doubled. After Mack walked,
Graham Conlon '14 sacrificed both runners up a base. Penaflor then singled up the middle, making it 7-3.
After a popout,
Kainoa Inafuku '14 was hit by a pitch. Towner then singled up the middle, plating two more runs.
Jacob Beecher '16 added an RBI single and Takayesu another to tie the game at 7-all.
Monmouth was shut out in the top of the ninth, leading to the Pioneers' big bottom half of the inning. With one out, Mack singled down the left-field line and advanced two bases on a pair of wild pitches. Penaflor then laid down a perfect bunt down the third-base line to score Mack, sending the Pioneers into celebration.
In the second game, Towner had a pair of hits, including a triple, and
Matt Godinsky '16 added a homer. Mack and Hammond both doubled.
Graham Fisher '16 and Kelley combined to toss a seven-hitter. Fisher worked 6-2/3 innings to get the win and Kelley the final 2-1/3 to earn the save.
Monmouth scored three runs in the top of the first, but Grinnell came back with six in the fourth. Penaflor walked to lead things off and went to third on Mack's double. Godinsky followed with a sacrifice fly.
Hammond later added an RBI double and Inafuku a run-scoring single. Towner broke the 3-3 deadlock with an RBI triple. An error pushed across another run and Takayesu had an RBI single to make it 6-3.
Monmouth made it 6-4 in the seventh, but the Pioneers pushed across two runs in the bottom of the seventh on Godinsky's two-run homer that scored Takayesu.
Grinnell is now 10-11 overall. Monmouth fell to 3-5 in the MWC and 10-12 in all games.
The Pioneers step out of MWC play Tuesday when they host Coe College at Pioneer Park. Game time is 3 p.m.
