Coe records 7-3 baseball win over Pioneers

Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College's baseball team dug itself a 4-0 hole and couldn't climb out as Coe College earned a 7-3 victory Tuesday afternoon at Pioneer Park.

Coe outhit the hosts 12-5. Ryan Penaflor '16 had three of Grinnell's hits, including a double.

The Kohawks, who are 8-11, scored two runs in the first inning and solo runs in the second and third for a four-run edge. The Pioneers sliced that gap in half in the bottom of the third. With one out, Teague Towner '17 singled to right and moved to second when Steven Petritis '15 walked.

Towner moved to third on a flyout and Petritis stole second before a play with errors on both the third baseman and left fielder allowed both to score.

Coe scored again in the sixth to go up 5-2, but Grinnell made it 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth as Penaflor singled to right, took second when Anthony Mack '16 walked, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch.

The Kohawks added two runs in the top of the seventh to account for the final margin.

Fletcher Zornes '17, the starter for Grinnell, suffered the loss.

The Pioneers, 10-12 overall, jump back into Midwest Conference play Saturday and Sunday with a pair of twin bills against Illinois College in Springfield, Ill.
