Knox takes pair of games from Pioneer softball team

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College softball team broke out to a 4-1 lead against Knox College in the opening game of a twin bill Saturday at the Softball Complex, only to see the Prairie Fire rally for a 14-6 victory.
 
Knox completed the Midwest Conference sweep with a 22-1 decision in the second game.
 
In the opener, Sage Juveland '17 and Megan Gibson '17 each had two hits for the Pioneers, who were out-hit only 8-7. Juveland had a triple among her totals.
 
Knox took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Pioneers erupted for four runs in the second. Teresa Villarreal '17 led off with a single to left and Jordan Matosky '16 walked. Both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch and an error on the catcher allowed them to score.
 
Lydia Stariha '17 then walked before Juveland tripled to left to score her. Gibson followed with an RBI single to left to plate Stariha.
 
Knox added a run in the third and took the lead for good with five runs in the fifth. The Prairie Fire scored three in the sixth and four more in the seventh.
 
Grinnell got two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Kristina Weber '16 hit an infield single and went to second when Villarreal reached on an error. An error allowed two runs to score before the game ended.
 
In the second game, Stariha had two hits to lead Grinnell's five-hit attack. Knox scored three runs in the top of the first, but the Pioneers answered with one in the bottom of the inning when Juveland singled to left, went to second on a single by Stariha, took third on an error and scored on Weber's groundout.
 
However, Knox tallied 11 runs in the second and continued to sail from there.
 
Gibson was the losing pitcher in the first game and Stariha the second.
 
Grinnell is now 0-10 in the Midwest Conference and 0-16 overall, while Knox moved to 2-9 in league play and 4-25 overall.
 
The Pioneers close out the home portion of their season Monday when Greenville College visits for a non-conference twin bill. The first pitch is 3 p.m.
