Box Score 2 GRINNELL, Iowa –
Lydia Stariha '17 was 5-of-6 at the plate to spark the Grinnell College softball team's offense in a pair of contests with Greenville College Monday afternoon at the Softball Complex.
Stariha was 3-for-3 with two runs scored in a 25-5 second-game loss and was 2-for-3, also with a run scored, in the 18-2 opening-game setback.
Grinnell trailed the second game just 7-5 after the second inning before the visitors took off for the win.
Sage Juveland '17,
Kristina Weber '16 and
Teresa Villarreal '17 had two hits in the contest to help spark the Pioneers' 12-hit attack, while
Laura Flannery '17 had a double.
Greenville scored five runs in the top of the first inning, but the Pioneers answered with a run in the bottom of the frame when Juveland singled up the middle, went to second on Stariha's single to left, moved to third on Weber's single to left and scored when Villarreal singled through the left.
Greenville made it 7-1 in the top of the second before the Pioneers exploded for four runs in the bottom of the inning. Flannery led off with a double to left and moved to third on Juveland's infield single. Stariha singled through the left side to score Flannery and
Megan Gibson '17 singled through the left side to load the bases.
Weber's single up the middle plated two runs. After Villarreal singled up the middle,
Jordan Matosky '16 singled to right to push across another runner.
However, the Panthers scored three runs in the third, nine in the fourth and six in the fifth to secure the win.
In the opener, Greenville got out to an 18-0 lead through the top of the fourth. In the bottom of the inning, Stariha tripled to center field and crossed the plate on an error. Gibson then singled up the middle, advanced to second on Weber's infield single, took third on Villarreal's single through the left side and scored when Matosky singled to left.
Stariha was the pitcher of record in both games for Grinnell.
Grinnell is now 0-18, while Greenville moved to 25-11. The Pioneers travel to Monmouth College for a Midwest Conference twin bill on Thursday.
