Box Score 2 GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College baseball team won a pair of one-run thrillers in key Midwest Conference South Division contests with Knox College Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Park.
Grinnell scored three runs in the bottom of the 10th inning, capped by
Teague Towner's game-winning single, to take the opener 6-5. The Pioneers finished off the sweep with a 3-2 win in the second game.
The Pioneers pounded out 14 hits in the opener, with
Anthony Mack '16 coming up with four,
Niko Takayesu '17 and
Jacob Beecher '16 three each and Matt Godinksy '16 a pair. Takayesu hit the first homer of his collegiate career and Godinsky doubled.
Grinnell got out to a 3-0 lead with solo runs in the first, third and fifth innings. In the first, Mack singled up the middle, stole second and scored on Godinsky's single up the middle. Takayesu blasted a solo homer in the third inning.
In the fifth, Takayesu singled through the right side, was sacrificed to second by
Ryan Penaflor '16 and scored when Mack singled to right.
However, Knox crept back into the game with two runs in the seventh and another in the ninth. The Prairie Fire then struck for two runs in the 10th for a 5-3 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, Mack singled through the right side with one out and took third on Godinsky's double to left-center. Beecher then hit a two-run single to right. After Beecher stole second, Towner delivered the game-winning single through the right side as the Pioneers erupted in celebration.
Andrew Kelley '14 was the winning pitcher in relief, striking out six batters in 3-2/3 innings. He is now 5-1 on the season.
In the second game, the Pioneers rapped out 12 hits including two each by Mack, Godinsky and
Kainoa Inafuku '14. Penaflor and Inafuku each had doubles.
Sam Tinkham '14 dominated on the mound, scattering four hits and fanning four to improve to 4-1 with a complete-game effort.
The Pioneers got two runs in the bottom of the first inning as Penaflor doubled down the right-field line and moved to third on Mack's single up the middle. Godinsky followed with an RBI single to right-center and Beecher later knocked in a run on a groundout.
Knox tied the game with two runs in the fourth, but the Pioneers tallied in the fifth to close out the scoring. Godinsky had a one-out infield single, moved to second on
Matt Hammond's single up the middle, went to third on Beecher's single through the left side and scored on
Walker Bell's '15 sacrifice fly.
Grinnell is now 7-3 in the MWC South and 14-14 overall, while Knox fell to 2-8 in the league and 13-15 in all games. The teams meet again Sunday in Galesburg, Ill. The first pitch of the twin bill is slated for 1 p.m.
