Pioneer softball team drops pair of games to Monmouth

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MONMOUTH, Ill. – The Grinnell College softball team dropped a pair of contests to Monmouth College Saturday afternoon.
 
The Fighting Scots captured the opener 18-0 and the second game 16-4. Monmouth improved to 7-3 in the Midwest Conference South Division and 20-14 overall, while the Pioneers fell to 0-8 in the league and 0-20 overall.
 
In the second game, Grinnell managed eight hits including two by Megan Gibson '17. Teresa Villarreal '17 had a double.
 
Monmouth led 15-0 before the Pioneers got two runs in the fourth as Gibson singled, moved to third on Villarreal's double and scored on a single by Laura Flannery '17. Alex Neckopulos '17 followed with an RBI single.
 
Grinnell got two more runs in the fifth. Lydia Stariha '17 and Gibson led off with consecutive singles before moving up a base on Kristina Weber's 16 sacrifice. An error then allowed both runners to score.
 
In the opener, Grinnell managed two hits, those coming from Jordan Matosky '16 and Andie Semlow '16.
 
Gibson was the losing pitcher in the first game and Stariha the second.
 
The Pioneers close out their campaign with two games Sunday at Lake Forest College. Action begins at 11 a.m.
