Grinnell opens MWC softball play with losses to IC

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College softball team opened Midwest Conference play Saturday with a pair of home losses to Illinois College.
 
The Lady Blues had 14 hits and took advantage of six Pioneer errors to win the opener 14-0. Grinnell had two hits, a first-inning single by Lydia Stariha '17 and a single by Megan Gibson '17 in the fourth. Gibson was the pitcher of record for Grinnell.
 
Illinois College posted a 13-1 win in the second game, with errors again plaguing the Pioneers as they committed seven.
 
Grinnell had four hits, including doubles by Stariha and Teresa Villarreal '17. Sage Juveland '17 and Amanda Mages '17 added singles.
 
Grinnell's run came in the fifth inning when Villarreal doubled to left field, took third on a groundout and scored on Mages' infield single. Gibson suffered the pitching loss.
 
Grinnell is now 0-2 in the MWC and 0-9 overall, while the Lady Blues improved to 2-2 in league play and 7-9 overall.
 
The Pioneers travel to East Peoria, Ill., for the Midwest Conference Crossover on Friday through Sunday.
