Grinnell women's tennis team earns 2nd NCAA Tourney win in school history

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Grinnell College women's tennis team claimed its second NCAA Division III Tournament victory in school history Friday by toppling Coe College 5-0 Thursday.
 
The Pioneers, ranked 15th in the region, got off to a strong start by sweeping doubles play against the 14th-ranked Kohawks. This came less than two weeks after Grinnell dropped two of three doubles matches in a 5-4 setback to Coe.
 
Grinnell's team of Shirlene Luk '15-Clothilde Thirouin '14, ranked 13th in the region, won 8-6 at the top spot. Sadhana Athreya '14 and Emma Macdonald '14 were victorious 9-7 at No. 2 doubles, while Hanna Feldman '14 and Shanaz Daneshdoost '17 won 9-7 at No. 3.
 
Grinnell completed the win in singles as Feldman won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 and Macdonald earned a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 6.
 
Grinnell improved to 17-7 with the win while capturing its first NCAA win since 2009.  Coe finished at 19-6.
 
The Pioneers will take on host Washington University, ranked first in the region and ninth nationally, at 9 a.m. Friday.
