GRINNELL, Iowa – Playing with momentum from beating a regionally-ranked team three days earlier, the Grinnell College women's soccer squad kept rolling along Tuesday with a 4-1 win over Coe College at Springer Field.
Carolyn Silverman '17 scored two goals, while
Kitt Richards '18 and
Kristen Stacey '16 had one each as the Pioneers evened their record at 3-3. Coe dipped to 2-4.
Katy Oldach '16 had another strong performance at keeper, giving up just one goal on a perfectly-placed shot and recording four saves.
Grinnell got the scoring going early on, as Richards found the back of the net in the sixth minute for her second goal of the year. Silverman and
Claire Ruegg '16 had assists. Ruegg started the play by leading Silverman with a pass down the far wing. Silverman beat her defender into the box and then centered it. Richards received the pass just outside the goal and booted it in.
Coe tied things in the 33rd minute, but the Pioneers struck just four minutes later when Silverman scored on assists by
Hannah Truesdale '17 and
Eva Smith '16. Truesdale started the series by making a great pass into Smith, who turned and quickly dropped it for Silverman on the right side of the box. Silverman took a dribble and kicked the ball into the corner of the net.
The score remained 2-1 at halftime and into the second half before Grinnell made it 3-1 in the 66th minute on Stacey's unassisted goal. Richards took a shot from inside the box, but it deflected off a defender to just outside of the goal on the far side. Stacey knocked it in from there.
The Pioneers finished off the scoring in the 86th minute on Silverman's goal, her team-high third of the season. On the play, Truesdale kicked it up the center of the field to lead a streaking Silverman, who beat her defender, took a few dribbles and took a shot from the middle of the box for the score.
Grinnell outshot Coe 25-6, with Silverman taking six shots and
Andie Semlow '16 and
Maddie Gray '16 three apiece.
The Pioneers open Midwest Conference play Saturday when Knox College visits Springer Field. The contest begins at 3:30 p.m.
