Box Score WAUKESHA, Wis. – The Grinnell College men's basketball team battled back to force overtime against Carroll University Saturday afternoon, but the hosts used a 21-13 edge in the extra period to win 139-131 in Midwest Conference action.
Jack Taylor '15 scored a game-high 41 points for Grinnell with the aid of 7-of-13 shooting from 3-point land and a 14-of-16 effort from the free throw line.
Luke Yeager '15 added 28 points while going 10-of-11 from the charity stripe. He also had five rebounds and three steals.
Jacob Ekstrand '18 scored 16 points,
Matt Jasaitis '18 tallied 12 and
Braedon Bayer '18 had 11.
Kyle Parker '17 dished out five assists for the Pioneers, who are 5-4 in the MWC and 7-7 overall.
Carroll, 5-4 in the league and 8-6 in all games, got a triple-double of 31 points, 17 boards and 17 assists from Bryan Nagy.
Grinnell built a lead as big as nine in the first half when Taylor's 3-pointer with 6:49 left made it 41-32. But the hosts raced back to take a 60-49 halftime lead and went up by as many as 14 in the second half when a layup with 8:44 left made it 95-81.
Grinnell gradually chipped into the lead but still trailed by seven with 2:59 remaining. That's when the visitors went on an eight-point run to take command, as treys by
Ikaika Phillip '18 and Ekstrand and a layup by
Tague Zachary '15 made it a 113-112 lead for Grinnell with 1:25 left.
It went back and forth after that before regulation ended in a 118-all tie.
Yeager led off overtime with a layup, but Carroll responded with four points in a row. Grinnell forced three ties after that, the last at 128-all on
Nick Curta's '17 layup with 1:54 remaining.
However, Carroll then went on a seven-point run en route to the victory.
Grinnell heads to Mount Vernon Wednesday to face Cornell College in a league test. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
