AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Grinnell College baseball team kicked off its spring break trip on the right foot, defeating Anderson University 11-3 on Sunday.
Anthony Mack '16 was 5-of-6 at the plate, one hit shy of the Pioneers' school record, including a triple and double.
Niko Takayesu '17,
Ryan Penaflor '16 and
Walker Bell '15 each had three hits as the Pioneers went on an 18-hit barrage.
Sam Tinkham '15 was the winning pitcher, fanning six and scattering six hits over seven innings.
Grinnell struck for two runs in the first inning, and after Anderson scored once in the third inning, the Pioneers tacked on four runs in the fourth. Anderson scored once in the sixth before the Pioneers all but put the game away with five runs in the seventh.
On Monday, Grinnell lost decisions of 12-0 and 10-5 to Franklin & Marshall.
Takayesu and Bell had doubles in the first game, while Penaflor,
Graham Fisher '16 and Bell each had two hits in the latter. Fisher had two doubles among his totals, while Mack also doubled.
In the second game, Grinnell used a four-run output in the third inning to build a 4-2 lead. However, Franklin & Marshall rallied for the win.
Grinnell is slated to play Hope College on Tuesday.
