School record, grand slam spark Pioneer softball team

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 JANESVILLE, Wis. – A school record and grand slam homer sparked the Grinnell College softball team in the opening game of its Midwest Conference Crossover event on Friday.
 
Sage Juveland '17 went 4-for-4 at the plate to tie a school record for hits in a game, and Melissa Anderson '18 belted a grand slam homer in the Pioneers' 13-10 loss to Beloit College.
 
Grinnell had 12 hits in the game. Kayla Morrissey '18 came up with two hits and Lydia Stariha '17 and Kristina Weber '16 doubled.
 
The Pioneers got out to a 3-0 lead with a run in the first inning and three more in the third. Morrissey had an RBI single through the left side in the first, while a pair of errors led to the third-inning runs.
 
Beloit scored twice in the bottom of the third, but the Pioneers responded with a run in the fourth on Juveland's RBI single to center.
 
The Buccaneers scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth to grab a 7-4 lead, but the Pioneers responded with a run in the fifth on Anderson's sacrifice fly to center.
 
Grinnell erupted for five runs in the sixth to grab a 10-7 lead, sparked by Anderson's grand slam shot to center. Juveland added an RBI single through the right side.
 
However, Beloit scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull out the three-run win.
 
Also on Friday, the Pioneers fell 17-4 to Lawrence University. Morrissey had three hits in the game, including a double, while Juveland added two hits. Megan Gibson '17 also belted a double.
 
Lawrence scored a run in the top of the first, but the Pioneers responded with two in the bottom of the first on Juveland's RBI single to right and Morrissey's to center.
 
Lawrence scratched out solo runs in the second through fifth innings and scored four in the sixth for a 9-2 lead.
 
The Pioneers got a run back in the bottom of the sixth on Weber's sacrifice fly to left. After Lawrence put up eight runs in the seventh, Grinnell got one in the bottom of the frame on Morrissey's run-scoring double down the left-field line.
 
Grinnell, 0-18, meets Ripon College at 1 p.m. Saturday.
