Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS – The Grinnell College baseball team opened its four-game series at Washington University in stellar fashion Saturday, winning a twin bill 4-2 and 7-2.
In the opener,
Anthony Mack '16 had two hits, while
Niko Takayesu '17 and
Matt Hammond '17 had doubles.
Graham Fisher '16 earned the win, tossing seven-hit ball over seven innings while fanning three batters.
John Essig '16 worked a hitless ninth and struck out one to earn the save.
Grinnell erupted for three runs in the opening inning with the aid of a two-run single to right by
Ryan Penaflor '15. Washington scored two runs in the fourth to cut the gap to one.
The Pioneers padded their lead with a run in the ninth on Takayesu's RBI double down the right-field line.
In the second game, Fisher, Hammond and
Walker Bell '15 all had three hits, while Mack added two.
Teague Towner '17 hit a triple, Hammond two doubles and Mack and Fisher one double apiece.
Sam Tinkham '16 pitched six-hit ball over six innings and fanned three batters to earn the win.
Grinnell opened up a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Hammond scored on an error. The hosts scored a run in the bottom of the second to tie the game.
Grinnell went ahead to stay with two runs in the sixth as Fisher hit an RBI single up the middle and Bell added a run-scoring single to left-center.
The Pioneers put up three runs in the seventh with the aid of an RBI single up the middle by Mack and run-scoring double to left-center by Hammond.
The visitors scored one more run in the ninth when Hammond hit an RBI single to left. Washington scored a run in the bottom of the inning.
The teams meet again Sunday for a twin bill.
