GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College football team had the lead through nearly two quarters before Knox College rallied for a 37-6 victory Saturday afternoon at Rosenbloom Field.
After the Prairie Fire, who are 1-2 in the Midwest Conference and 1-4 overall, grabbed a 3-0 lead with a field goal in the first period, the Pioneers roared back with a TD early in the second.
The Pioneers stopped Knox on downs just prior to that before putting together a nine-play, 69-yard drive.
Tony Bergida '18 hit
David Taylor '20 with an 18-yard pass and
Carson Dunn '18 with a 14-yarder before
Jacob Bernholtz '17 rumbled 5 yards for the touchdown with 8:18 to go. The extra point was blocked.
Knox managed to score two touchdowns in the final two-and-a-half minutes of the period to go into halftime ahead 17-6. The Prairie Fire were up 23-6 after three periods.
Defensively,
Ryan Slager '19 led Grinnell with 20 tackles, including three tackles for loss.
Vinny Pavoni '19 added 15 tackles,
DJ Coleman '18 had 12,
Rick Johnson '20 tallied 11 and
Kent Hoover '17 came up with 10.
Offensively, Bernholtz rushed for 51 yards and Bergida completed seven passes for 99 yards.
Erik Henderson '19 had three catches for 60 yards.
Grinnell dipped to 0-4 in the MWC and 0-6 overall with the loss.
