Thrilling win gives Grinnell women's tennis team MWC crown

Grinnell 8, Lawrence 1
Grinnell 5, St. Norbert 4

DE PERE, Wis. – After just missing the Midwest Conference title the past two years, the Grinnell College women's tennis team is once again back atop the league.

In a thrilling battle of teams unbeaten in league play, the Pioneers worked past St. Norbert College 5-4 on Saturday. This followed Grinnell's 8-1 victory over Lawrence University as the Pioneers upped their league mark to 8-0 while moving to 9-1 overall.

Grinnell, which is riding a nine-match winning streak, used a huge rally to defeat St. Norbert after falling behind 2-1 in doubles. Grinnell's win came at the top spot, an 8-1 decision by Judith Fan '19 and Amelia Cogan '19.

The Pioneers then erupted for four singles wins. Megan Jans '19 finished first, a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 3 to tie the match at 2-all.

Cogan won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and Lily Hamilton '19 posted a 6-2, 1-6, 6-1 decision at No. 5, while St. Norbert also won twice, to tie things at 4-all.

Fan delivered the game-winner for Grinnell with a come-from-behind victory at No. 1, taking the match 6-7, 6-3, 6-3.

"I'm so incredibly proud of this group of dedicated women for winning the MWC regular season title," said Grinnell coach Paige Madara. "They have worked very hard in and out of practice since August and we have improved so much as a team this year. Their competitive fight and determination to win the title outright today was very evident in our third-set victories. Judy had a great comeback today to win in a third set to seal the title.

"It was an exciting match to be a part of today and I give a lot of credit to St. Norbert College for putting together a great season and a highly-competitive match," Madara continued. "It was a great feeling today for me as a coach to be a part of such a thrilling victory and to win the MWC regular season title in my first season as head coach."

In the win over Lawrence, Grinnell swept doubles with the teams of Fan-Cogan (8-1), Jans-Anushka Joshi '18 (8-2) and Hamilton-Brenda Guan '20 (8-5).

The Pioneers added singles wins at Nos. 1 through 5 with Fan (6-3, 6-0), Cogan (6-1, 6-1), Jans (6-1, 6-0), Joshi (6-0, 6-0) and Hamilton (6-0, 6-1).

Grinnell finishes its fall regular-season dual slate Sunday at Ripon College. The MWC Individual Tournament is next weekend in Madison, Wis.
