Westminster Out-Hits Grinnell in Season Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FULTON, Mo. - The Grinnell College softball team dropped a pair of games to Westminster College (Mo.) in the season opener on Saturday, March 19. Westminster's offense proved too much for the Pioneers as they out-hit Grinnell 29-11 and earned 13-8 and 11-0 victories.  
 
In game one, Grinnell jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two and a half innings of play. Sage Juveland had an RBI groundout in the first to put Grinnell up 1-0. In the second, Sidney Litke pushed another run across with an RBI single to the second baseman. Later in the inning, Melissa Anderson and Litke scored on Emily Jordan's single to shallow right field to make the score 4-0.

The Pioneers pushed another two runs across in the third on singles by Litke and Lydia Stariha. Westminster's bats caught fire in the bottom of the third inning, and they scored two runs with outs. Their hot hitting continued as they batted in six more runs in the fourth, three in the fifth, and two in the sixth to make the score 13-6.

Grinnell dug in, in the top of the seventh and managed to score two runs on a groundout by Litke and an error by the Westminster first baseman, but Westminster cut the comeback short with a final score of 13-8. Melissa Anderson recorded the loss for the Pioneers pitching 4 innings with 1 strike out, giving up 8 earned runs.
 
In Game two, Westminster's bats continued to shine as they broke open the scoring in a big way with 11 runs in the third inning. Grinnell recorded just one hit, a double by Kayla Morrissey in the first, and Westminster went on to win 11-0 in 5 innings. Maggie Remus was on the mound for the Pioneers and registered one strike out in three innings of play while giving up 11 earned runs.
 
Grinnell takes the field on Monday, March 21 in Clermont, Fla., against Elmhurst College and Western Connecticut State University.
