Box Score 2 ORLANDO, Fla. - The Grinnell College baseball team swept Midwest Conference foe, St. Norbert College, in the opening double header of their annual spring break trip. The Pioneers won game one 4-0 behind a stellar pitching performance by
Graham Fisher '16 and in game two
Andrew Mack '18 earned his first win of the season as Grinnell cruised to a 6-1 victory.
Game one was a tight affair through five innings with each team held scoreless as Fisher and opposing starter Jake McMahon allowed only two hits apiece. In the top of the sixth, pinch-hitter
Addison Mock '19 delivered a leadoff single and was driven in three hitters later by
Ryan Penaflor '16.
Sam Galanek '18 and
Ravi Levens '19 would add insurance RBI that proved unnecessary. Galanek and Penaflor had two hits each in the game.
Fisher on his second win of the young season, "I did a good job of attacking hitters early and throwing all of my pitches for strikes which helped me to use my fastball later on. I was focusing on not doing too much and just throwing strikes."
Fisher allowed only the two hits in 6 1/3 innings while striking out nine Green Knight hitters and walking none.
Matt Godinsky '16 pitched the final two outs to seal the win.
In game two the Pioneers banged out 11 hits and, after
Anthony Mack '16 tripled and scored in the first inning, sailed to the 6-1 victory. Galanek added three more hits upping his already impressive early season batting average to .538, while Fisher, Godinsky, and
Michael Slattery '18 each added two hits.
Perhaps the biggest blow came on Fisher's two-run double in the third inning. "I was trying to stay back and get a good pitch to hit. Fortunately, he left one up in the zone and I took advantage of it."
Andrew Mack went 6 full innings scattering five hits and striking out six.
Ben Binversie '17 struck out two in the final inning to seal the win and the double-header sweep.
The Pioneers are back at it tomorrow against Loras College for one nine-inning game starting at 12:15 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
