Box Score CLERMONT, Fla. -Â The Grinnell College softball team edged out the Colonials from Centre College, 2-1, for its third win of the season. Grinnell's defense was rock solid and prevented Centre from gaining offensive momentum throughout the game.
Â
Grinnell got things started early in the bottom of the first inning when
Sage Juveland tripled to left field, and
Kayla Morrissey executed a squeeze bunt to push her across the plate. Both teams settled in on defense, and the score stayed 1-1 until the top of the fifth.
A Centre College triple tied up the game, but the Pioneers responded in their half of the inning by loading the bases with a walk by Juveland and two infield singles by Morrissey and
Andi Leff, all with two outs. Grinnell was granted a boon in the form of an illegal pitch by Centre College that allowed all runners to advance and scored Juveland to make the score 2-1. Grinnell locked in on defense to close out the final two innings and collect another win.
Melissa Anderson had another impressive performance on the mound with 5 strikeouts and no walks in her second complete game of the season.Â
