Softball Wins Twice on Spring Trip

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Clermont, Fla. – The Grinnell College softball team had a big opening day at The Spring Games Tournament. They opened play with a 9-2 win over Elmhurst College and capped the day off with a 4-3 win over Western Connecticut State University.

The Pioneers came ready to play in game one, going up 7-0 against Elmhurst after batting around in the first inning. Grinnell loaded up the bases right out of the gates thanks to singles by Lydia Stariha and Sage Juveland and a walk by Kayla Morrissey. Andi Leff then singled to score Stariha and Juveland. An infield single by Maggie Remus pushed Leff across. Elmhurst pitcher Val Perrelli issued a couple of walks that plated Emily Jordan and Melissa Anderson. Juveland singled again to score Remus and Ashley Wehrenberg.

Grinnell gave up one run apiece in the second and third innings to bring the score to 7-2. In the top of the fourth, Morrissey had a leadoff double to the left field fence followed by a single by Leff. A pair of RBI groundouts scored both Morrissey and Leff. The Pioneers held the Blue Jays scoreless for the final four innings of the game to grab the win. Anderson collected the win, pitching a complete game with three strikeouts and no earned runs.

WCSU took an early 1-0 lead after capitalizing on a Pioneer error. Grinnell bounced back in the bottom of the third with a trio of singles by Wehrenberg, Stariha, and Juveland. With the bases loaded, Morrissey ripped a 2-run double down the right field line to give Grinnell a 2-1 lead. Leff's infield single gave the Pioneers a 3-1 advantage. In the top of the fifth inning, a throwing error by Jordan, the catcher, and some effective small ball scored 2 runs for the Colonials to make it a tie game. Grinnell responded in their half of the inning after a walk and a single put two runners on base. A single up the middle by Jordan gave Grinnell the go-ahead run. Remus, with a strong defense behind her, closed out the last two innings to secure the win for Grinnell. Remus also threw a complete game with three strikeouts and no walks.

The Pioneers next take the field on Tuesday, March 22 at 9:00 a.m. Eastern Standard Time against Centre College.
