Box Score After a bout of steady rain the night before, Friday's game between Grinnell and Fontbonne was played on a damp and sluggish field. And perhaps it was the rain that extinguished the hot bats of the Pioneers, who fell to the Griffins 2-1.

Grinnell (6-3) starter Graham Fisher '16 went seven innings for his first loss of the season. The starting pitcher for Fontbonne (6-11), Brendan Beck, survived only five innings but it was Austin Earnest throwing four shutout innings out of the bullpen that garnered the win.

Both teams left 10 runners on base in the contest and it was the lack of clutch hitting that spelled the Pioneers. Of their 10 runners left on base, eight were left in scoring postion.

The lone run scored by the Scarlet and Black came off of back-to-back doubles by Addison Mock '19 and Matt Hammond '17. Throughout the game, Matt Godinsky '16 led the way, reaching base four times, including two hits and two walks. Benjamin Wong '18 also tallied two hits.

For the victors, it was the Boyer brothers who did most of the damage. Leadoff hitter, Ethan Boyer, had two hits while his brother Aaron had three from the ninth spot in the order.

Grinnell's defense did not help the cause with its' two errors each leading to the Griffins' two runs.

The Pioneers take on St. Olaf College on Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at 10:30am EST.
