Box Score 2 Clermont, FL – The Pioneers split a pair of games as they continue their spring break stint in Florida. Grinnell started the afternoon with an 8-0 loss to Bowdoin College in five innings, but they regrouped for the second game of the day and pulled out a 6-2 victory against the Thomas College Terriers. Grinnell lacked consistency early in the day, but ended on a high note with a 10 hit game.
Â
In Grinnell's opener for the day, Bowdoin jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first after a walk, an error, and a double. In the top of the second, the Pioneers put a runner in scoring position after
Melissa Anderson doubled to lead off the inning but were unable to put the run up on the board. Both teams were held scoreless in the second and the third, but the Polar Bears exploded for six runs in the fourth with 7 hits for the inning including three doubles. "Bowdoin just seemed to take advantage of the momentum they had at the plate today," said Head Coach
Amanda Reckamp. Grinnell failed to build their own momentum in the top half of the fifth, and the game ended in five innings.
Melissa Anderson collected the loss for the Pioneers giving up 8 hits, 6 earned runs, walking 1 and striking out 1.
Â
After a quick regrouping the Pioneers took the field against Thomas College.
Lydia Stariha got the offense started with an infield single and stolen base and was quickly hit in on a
Sage Juveland double to left field. The Terriers responded with 2 runs of their own on an error and a single to center field to make the score 2-1. In the top of the second,
Megan Gibson drew a walk and eventually scored on a Stariha single to right field, evading a tag at the plate. Stariha crossed the plate after a Juveland single to left, and the Pioneers regained the lead, going up 3-2. After two scoreless innings, Grinnell struck again in the fifth when
Andi Leff led off the inning with a single.
Kristina Weber reached on a fielder's choice and brought
Maggie Remus to the plate with runners at first and third. Remus came through with a clutch single that drove in Leff.
Jordan Matosky, in to run for Weber, and Remus both scored on RBI groundouts to push the lead to 6-2. The Pioneer defense led by Remus on the mound held steady in the final 3 innings to give Grinnell the win. Remus gave up 6 hits, 0 earned runs, and struck out 4. "After the first game our approach felt different, and we were able to control the game even after allowing two runs early," said Reckamp. "Maggie executed on the mound, and Sage was hitting the ball hard offensively, which really fueled us."

The Pioneers will look to build on this offensive production in their final games in Clermont.Â
