Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 For the first time during this Spring Break trip, the weather felt like it should in Florida. And on this hot humid sunny day, the Pioneers (8-3) took both games of the doubleheader from St. Olaf College (4-8) by scores of 2-1 and 5-2.
In the first game,
Sam Tinkham '16 went into the seventh inning to get his second win of the year. He collected 10 strikeouts, allowed five hits and gave up only the one run.
Ben Binversie '17 came on to record his first save of the season, allowing no hits in 2/3 of an inning.
The Pioneers got the scoring started in the third inning when
Ryan Penaflor '16 doubled, advanced to third on a wild pitch and was driven home on an RBI-groundout by
Sam Galanek '18. St. Olaf tied it up at 1-1 in the fifth. In the top of the seventh,
Niko Takayesu '17 knocked home the game winning run when he singled in
Coby Klar '16.
Takayesu on his game-winning at-bat, "We talked with Coach Cooprider before the at-bat and we talked about putting the ball in play hard and I got to give credit to Coby (Klar) for being aggressive, getting a good jump off third and making a great slide."
In the second game,
Graham Fisher '16 hit a mammoth three-run homerun in the first inning to stake the Pioneers to a lead they would not relinquish. The Oles would prove to make things interesting though, by scoring twice in the top of the 6
th inning. Grinnell was up to the task, however, when
Matt Godinsky '16 doubled home
Jacob Bernholtz '17 only to be driven home by
Anthony Mack '16 who also hit a double. Those two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth extended the lead to the final margin of victory.
Sam Lopez '18 got his first start of the season and was the winning pitcher. He filled in ably for an ailing
Andrew Mack '18 who was scheduled to be the starting pitcher. Lopez went five full innings allowing no runs on only three hits, walking none and registering four strikeouts.
Godinsky pitched a clean seventh inning by striking out all three St. Olaf hitters and earning his third save of the season. "I felt confident coming out of the bullpen, especially after we were able to tack on a few insurance runs in the sixth inning. I was focusing on being aggressive and challenging their hitters with the fastball early in the count, but my curveball was also working well and I was able to use that to put the hitters away once I got ahead."
