Baseball Takes Two From Knox

Ryan Penaflor '16
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 On a picture-perfect day at Pioneer Park, the Grinnell College baseball team swept both games of a doubleheader from visiting Knox College by final scores of 9-0 and 22-6.

In Game One, Sam Tinkham '16 was back on the mound for the first time since throwing a no-hitter 10 days ago and he continued to pitch like the staff ace.  Tinkham threw his second complete game shutout of the season, both in MWC play.  On Saturday, he allowed four hits while striking out 10 and walking one Prairie Fire hitter.

Knox starter Tom Janczur kept the Pioneer offense in check through six innings of work and left the game with a 3-0 deficit.  In the seventh inning, two-run doubles off the bats of Coby Klar '16 and Anthony Mack '16 pushed the Grinnell lead to 7-0.  A couple of insurance runs later extended the lead and provided the final tally.

Ryan Penaflor '16 and Graham Fisher '16 both had two hits, Fisher drove in a pair of RBI as well.

Game Two started with Knox opening up a 3-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a three-run home run by Ryan Weitendorf.  Grinnell answered with a single run in the bottom of the first and then erupted for 15 runs in the second inning putting the game out of reach.

Each Pioneer starter had at least one hit and scored one run in the game.  Penaflor added two more hits and four RBI while Ravi Levens '19 drove in three and added his first-career collegiate home run in the third inning.   Matt Godinsky '16 hit his fifth home run of the year, a three-run shot in the fourth.

Charles Carr '19 started the game and picked up his third win of the season.  Michael Slattery '18 added two no-hit innings out of the bullpen to close out the game.

The Pioneers have now won seven consecutive and 13 of the last 14 games.

Grinnell (19-4, 6-0 MWC) and Knox (4-13, 0-2 MWC) meet again on Sunday in Galesburg, Illinois for the final two games of the series.
