Grinnell women's tennis team punches ticket to nationals by claiming MWC crown

MADISON, Wis. – The Grinnell College women's team rose to the occasion at precisely the right time, avenging an earlier loss to Lake Forest College with a 5-0 victory in the Midwest Conference championship match Friday.
 
The Pioneers, who had lost 5-4 to Lake Forest last fall, improved to 15-8overall and claimed the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Division III National Tournament.
 
Grinnell has now won 10 of the last 12 MWC titles and owns 11 overall, most in the league.
 
The Pioneers began the title match by sweeping doubles play with the teams of Amelia Cogan-Judith Fan (8-6), Megan Jans-Anushka Joshi (8-5) and Sydney Banach-Julia Rumley (8-0).
 
Joshi won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 singles and Lily Hamilton posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 to complete the victory.
 
Grinnell got into the title match with a 5-2 semifinal win over St. Norbert College. The Pioneers got wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles with the teams of Jans-Joshi (8-1) and Banach-Rumley (9-7).
 
In singles, Joshi won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4, Hamilton posted a 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 5 and Minna Montgomery won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6.
