Box Score 2 Less than 24 hours after Saturday's wind chills hovered in the mid-30's, temperatures on Sunday exceeded 70. Along with the warm April air came hotter bats. Grinnell and the visiting Bears of Washington University – St. Louis combined for 51 runs on the day, en route to a split.
Game OneThe Pioneers took game one 12-6 behind the bat and arm of
Graham Fisher '16. As starting pitcher and designated hitter, Fisher managed to pitch six innings, earn the win and reached base five times including hitting two two-run homeruns. Combined with his performance on Saturday, Fisher hit four four-baggers and drove in 10 runs on the weekend.
Not to be completely outdone were the two hitters just behind Fisher in the batting order.
Matt Hammond '17 and
Matt Godinsky '16 both hit solo homeruns, giving each "Matt" three round-trippers on the season.
After jumping out to a 7-1 lead, the Pioneers found themselves in a 7-4 game in the eighth inning only to add five runs in the bottom of the frame and put the score out of reach. This time it wasn't the long ball that created runs; it was the short game and base running that rattled the Bears (15-11). The inning started when
Ryan Penaflor '16 was hit-by-pitch and two balks, two errors, another HBP, a walk, and three singles later the Pioneers had opened the lead to an insurmountable level.
Shane Comiskey '17 pitched three innings in relief of Fisher and allowed two runs on only two hits.
Game Two After jumping out to a 4-1 lead in the nightcap, the Pioneers failed to keep pace with the Bears, eventually falling 15-8.
Grinnell had already scored twice in the first inning before Godinsky hit a two-run blast, his second on the day and fourth of the season. But it was an eight-run third inning that proved to be the undoing of the home team. WashU hit four homeruns and two doubles in the frame, opening up a 10-4 lead they would not relinquish.
Though the game was not without intrigue. After scoring three runs on a single hit in the bottom of the third and a
Sam Galanek '18 solo shot in the 5
th inning, the Pioneers had cut the lead to 10-8. WashU's five-run 7
th, aided by two Grinnell errors, gave the Bears the seven run lead proving to be the final score.
Grinnell stands at 12-4 and opens MWC play on Thursday at Monmouth College before returning back to Pioneer Park to finish the four-game series with the Scots on Saturday.
