Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Saturday's cold temperatures may have delayed the beginning of the doubleheader between the Pioneers and visiting Monmouth Scots, but they didn't faze the Grinnell pitchers who dealt two shutouts on the way to a 6-0 game one win and a 3-0 victory in the second.
Game One
Just before the original start time of 1:00pm, the "feels like" temperature was below 32 degrees Fahrenheit and the game was delayed 20 minutes to ensure baseball appropriate temperatures were reached before the first pitch.
Graham Fisher '16 got the start and threw eight innings of three-hit baseball while tallying five strikeouts. He walked four but in usual Fisher fashion was able to get a couple groundball double plays to work out of trouble.
Fisher and the Pioneer offense scored four times in the bottom of the first inning before recording an out and chased Monmouth starter Logan Spangler after the first four hitters reached base.
Anthony Mack '16 and
Ryan Penaflor '16 opened with back-to-back doubles before
Sam Galanek '18 added an RBI single of his own. Fisher then hit his seventh homerun of the year, a towering two-run blast over the trees behind the left field wall.
The rest of the offense came from a variety of sources.
Matt Hammond '17 hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the third inning. Penaflor and
Niko Takayesu '17 had two hits each, Fisher had the two RBI and Galanek scored twice. Fisher and Takayesu each added a stolen base.
Jay Goldsher '18 pitched a hitless ninth inning, striking out one Scot hitter.
Game Two
Grinnell 's (16-4, 4-0 MWC) offense couldn't repeat the first inning scoring explosion but the Pioneer pitching staff equaled their game one performance, preventing Monmouth (10-11, 0-4 MWC) from tallying any runs.
Starter
John Essig '16 delivered seven complete innings, allowing five hits and three walks but added five strikeouts. Essig pitched around multiple base runners in four of his seven innings including a bases loaded jam in the third.
Sam Lopez '18 and
Matt Godinsky '16 threw the eighth and ninth innings respectively, Lopez gave up a couple hits and Godinsky is credited with a save.
Offensively, the Pioneers had seven hits, including doubles by Galanek and Hammond. They also procured seven walks, two by Mack. Monmouth pitched out of some jams as well, as Grinnell stranded 12 runners in eight offensive innings. Mack added two stolen bases, while Klar had one.
Grinnell travels to Pella, IA to face IIAC foe Central on Wednesday at 3:00pm before returning to Pioneer Park and MWC play on Saturday against Knox College, first game at 1:00pm.
