LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Grinnell College's women's tennis team kicked off Midwest Conference play in stellar fashion Saturday, defeating Lake Forest College and Beloit College on the road.
 
The Lake Forest match, pitting the top two league teams in the preseason poll, turned into an 8-1 Pioneer rout.
 
Grinnell opened with a doubles sweep from the teams of Judith Fan '19-Amelia Cogan '19 (8-4), Megan Jans '19-Anushka Joshi '18 (8-5) and Lily Hamilton '19-Brenda Guan '20 (8-2).
 
Grinnell got wins at Nos. 1 and 2 singles from Fan (6-1, 6-2) and Cogan (6-3, 6-0). The Pioneers also won at Nos. 4 through 6 with Joshi (6-1, 6-2), Hamilton (6-3, 6-3) and Guan (6-2, 6-2).

A 9-0 blanking of Beloit College featured seven shutouts, with Grinnell winning 96 games overall compared to three for Beloit.

Posting 8-0 doubles wins were the teams of Fan-Cogan and Hamilton-Guan. Jans and Joshi won 8-2. In singles, Fan, Cogan, Jans, Joshi and Hamilton won consecutive 6-0 sets and Guan won 6-0, 6-1.
 
The Pioneers are now 1-0 in the MWC and 2-1 overall.
