Murphy's walk-off game-winner lifts Pioneers to split with Marshalltown

Game 1
Game 2

GRINNELL, Iowa – After losing Sunday afternoon's opening game, the Grinnell College softball team gained a measure of revenge in the nightcap against Marshalltown Community College.

The Pioneers rallied from a 3-0 deficit with three runs in the sixth inning and the game-winner in the seventh to record a 4-3 victory at the Softball Complex. Mikyla Murphy '19 provided the game-winning walk-off hit, a single to left field.

Megan Gibson '17 had two hits in the game, including a double, and Maggie Remus '18 was the winning pitcher. She scattered six hits and struck out three.

The visitors scored two runs in the first inning and another in the third for a 3-0 edge. It stayed that way until the sixth when Sage Juveland '17 reached on an error and advanced two bases via passed balls. After Andi Leff '18 walked, Ashley Wehrenberg '19 hit an RBI infield single for the Pioneers' first run.

Remus later plated two more runs with a single to center field.

After holding Marshalltown scoreless in the top of the seventh, Lydia Stariha '17 began the bottom of the frame with an infield single. She went to second on a passed ball, took third on a groundout and scored on Murphy's game-winner.

Marshalltown won the opener 10-7 after breaking out to a 6-0 lead. Stariha was 3-for-3 for Grinnell with a double.

The Pioneers dented Marshalltown's lead with three runs in the third thanks to a two-run single to left by Murphy and RBI groundout by Wehrenberg.

However, the visitors scored three runs in the top of the fourth to make it 9-3. Grinnell scored in each of the next three innings on sacrifice flies by Juveland and Gibson and RBI single to left by Morrissey.

The winners scored a run in the top of the seventh. Grinnell made some noise in the bottom half of the inning with a run via an error, but could pull no closer.

Murphy was the pitcher of record for Grinnell.

The Pioneers entertain Loras College at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in a twin bill.
