ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – After a hard-fought loss to start the day, the Grinnell College women's tennis team stormed back to blank Edgewood College 9-0 on the opening day of the 2017-18 season Saturday.

Milica Cvrkota '21 and
Abigail Nielsen '21 began their collegiate tennis careers in impressive fashion, each winning four times in as many tries.

Cvrkota won 6-3, 6-1 at the top singles spot against Edgewood and teamed with
Ali Hickey '21 to earn an 8-0 victory at No. 2 doubles. In the Pioneers' 5-4 loss to Augustana College to start the day, Cvrkota won 7-5, 7-5 in singles and teamed with Hickey to post an 8-4 victory in doubles.

Nielsen won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles against Edgewood and 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4 in the Augustana match. In No. 1 doubles, Nielsen and
Amelia Cogan '19 won 8-1 against Edgewood and 8-3 against Augustana.

Cogan won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles against Edgewood. Winning at the No. 4 through 6 spots were
Anushka Joshi '18 (6-2, 7-5),
Lily Hamilton '19 (6-1, 6-1) and
Sydney Banach '18 (6-2, 6-1).

Banach and Hamilton added an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles against Edgewood.
"The team really set the tone today for our fall season," said Grinnell coach
Paige Madara. "They came out fired up and ready to play hard in the morning matches. Our doubles teams battled to get us leads in both matches, which propelled us going into singles. While we came up just a little short in our first match, the team fought hard and showed a lot of grit, especially in how they responded for a convincing win against a tough Edgewood team."

Grinnell, 1-1 on the season, competes in the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Tournament next weekend.
