Pioneer women's tennis team concludes historic season

JANESVILLE, Wis. – Grinnell College completed its historic women's tennis season Saturday with a 5-0 loss to nationally-ranked University of Chicago in the second round of the NCAA Division III National Tournament.
 
In doubles plays, Chicago got out to a 3-0 lead with wins over the Pioneer duos of Milica Cvrkota '21-Abby Nielsen '21 (8-1), Ali Hickey '21-Anushka Joshi '18 (8-2) and Sydney Banach '18-Brenda Guan '20 (8-1). Hickey lost 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and Joshi lost 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4. Chicago, No. 1 in the Central Region and 10th nationally, improved to 18-4.
 
Grinnell, ranked 19th in the Central Region, tied the school mark for wins in a season in 2017-18 by going 20-5. Joshi finished her career ranked fourth at Grinnell in singles wins with 65 and seventh in doubles victories with 60. Banach is 15th in doubles victories with 48.
 
Nielsen finished the season with 26 singles wins, second-most in Grinnell history, and Hickey's 25 doubles wins also rank second. Joshi's 19 singles wins rank 16th.
