Heath records another career best in Pioneers' loss at Northwestern-St. Paul

ST. PAUL, Minn. - One game after establishing a career best, Tyria Heath '21 was at it again Saturday afternoon.

The Grinnell College women's basketball player erupted for 28 points, the best in her career, in a 76-66 setback at Northwestern-St. Paul. Heath had a particularly sharp eye in the game, hitting 90 percent of her field goal times for a figure that ranks second in program history. She was 9-of-10 from the field and added a 10-of-13 performance from the free throw line.

Ellie Gubbrud '22 added a career-high nine points and Kate Tomczik '22 grabbed nine rebounds. Sofia Ahooja '22 contributed four assists and two steals for the Pioneers, who are 1-3 on the season.

Grinnell got out to a quick start, scoring eight of the game's first 10 points on two baskets by Heath and one each by Tomczik and Ahooja. The Pioneers kept at it, building the cushion to 10 points when Annie Filkins' '23 3-pointer made it 19-9 at the 1:20 mark of the first period.

Northwestern closed within 19-13 by the end of the period and was within 36-35 by halftime. The lead changed hands a few times early in the third period, with Grinnell getting it for the final time at 40-39 on Heath's layup.

However, the hosts took off and were up 54-45 at the end of the quarter. Grinnell chipped away in the fourth period, coming within 64-60 on Heath's layup with 3:37 left. But Northwestern scored seven of the next eight points and went on to win, improving to 2-4.

Grinnell is back in action Sunday at Darby Gymnasium when Providence University College of Manitoba, Canada, visits. Tip-off is at 2 p.m.
